First, I have a severe case of "megalomania" (a delusion of grandeur or power). In my mind, BIGGER is always better and I just can't seem to buy, build or use small. I hate buyers remorse, so I usually study til my brain hurts and then pick a size larger. But in this case, I'm questioning my disease.
Here's my dilemma: I have 3 heavily wooded and 1 mowable acre in the far west Chicago burbs; plan on building in the next couple of years. I'll primarily be a weekend user as my weekdays are loaded. For my land, I will be doing the usual; mowing, moving dirt/rock/sand/logs/mulch/snow. I suppose I could get by with an 'X' and a few additional trips. I used a friends JD 4110 w/ FEL and MMM (great guy and machine)and my megalomania immediately makes my Deere of choice the 4115 because of the 4 extra HP.
Then, Deere introduces the 2210. I know, do you believe it? Size wise....it's smaller. A different machine design, but apparantly a good one. Honestly, based on lot size/use, the temptation now is to have a machine of that size and that 24 HP (smaller tires, limited cat. 1 and no folding ROPS). With large oaks, maneuvering with no folding ROPS under low hanging branches is certainly an issue, but then again, I have a Deere chain saw. So too is mowing and moving under/around the trees.....potentially better with the 2210 than the 4000 series. But are these substantial concerns? Although implements will come later (FEL and MMM are all I need to start), the 'limited' does concern me a bit for future landscaping/gardening needs.
I'm fortunate, because dollars and the local Dealer service quality are not at issue. I've frequently checked this fantastic board and memorized all the spec differences between the three (2210, 4110 and 4115). I want this to be my Green Baby for a long time and making a realistic decision (based on lot size/use) is the primary reason for this post.
Am I missing any issues of substance for my smaller lot? I think the 2210 would be just fine but will it be enough machine? Should I step up to the 4110 or the 4115? OR, should I just buy the 4310 (or BIGGER) and be done with it? I know there are other megalomania guys out there, so, what do you think?

The only real functional difference between the 41xx series and the 2210 is the ground clearance.
As long as that is not an issue AND you are buying enough horsepower to spin whatever mower you choose, shop for the best deal. ....

If me (I have a woods too), I would go at least to the 41xx, and maybe to the 4310. Why not create just a little envy with the 'friend' who has the 41xx. The size of the tires on the 2110 are small and getting around in a woods with that low clearance and getting over rocks and downed logs with small tires (even though the 4wd is a big help) is not enjoyable. Your selection of 3pt attachments will be better with the 4310. You have a good point about the ROPS but we can "live" with it. I would rather not have the ROPS in the woods as it catches low hanging branches when going by and brushes the back of your head. I'd rather duck the branch and forget it, but not with the reminder when the ROPS brings it forward. ....

Kay makes some great points. I agree with him.
The 4310 tractor may be the better choice if you need the attributes of the bigger tractor. A 25-hp. tractor is just so versatile!
If going with the 4310, choose the larger, 430 loader due to dump height and lift capacity.

I just purchased a 2210 with FEL, tiller and imatch. Like you I did a LOT of capitulateing. I have 80 Heavily wooded acres with two main roads that I have had dozed. I currently have 1 tillable acre but that will be 2 by this deer season. I live in the typical sub with a lot of landscapeing which I have to chuckle about now as I think back. I believe I moved about 60 yards of top soil 1 wheelbarrow at a time. lol. I sure could have used that FEL then. I will use this for heavy storm snow removeal only, at home. You can upgrade ad nauseum. The 2210 has 25 hp. I would prefer a higher ground clearance but hey I'd also like to have 100 acres. The weight for towing was a break point for me and while I could afford the $ for the 4xxx series, why part with the xtra $ ? I think JD is going to sell about a billion of theese little green buggers. The price and features make a great buy. ....

We've got about an acre of finish mowing on each of two properties 10-miles apart and several acres of bush as well. Landscaping and outbuildings cut up the mowing into a number of odd shaped plots. I stick with a riding mower rather than get a mower for my 24 hp tractor. I believe the riding mower is faster than the tractor would be. The tractor would take time to maneuver and leave a lot of trimming.
That's a case for smaller I guess, but I still wouldn't want a smaller tractor because the other things I do need the size.
Jack: I think there's a typo in your post that could be changed with the edit function. I have to use it frequently myself.

Remember in most cases the only difference between tractor size is time. It just takes a little longer to do certain chores. My friend has a small kubota he does simliar work than me but it just takes him longer. As long as your not trying to do full size equipment work with a compact you would probably be fine with any of them. I do have to say I would go with the biggest tractor you could possibly fit on your property. If you are going to have to mow around a lot of trees I would get a commercial mower and mow circles around any tractor could even think of mowing. Then you wouldn't have to maybe worry about the size as much. ....
